General Note
In April of 1846, newlyweds Sarah Graves and Jay Fosdick made a fateful decision to jrourney west from Illinois with Sarah's family, bound for California. Seven months later, after joing a party of emigrants led by George Donner, they arrived at Truckee Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains just as the first heavy snows of the season closed the pass ahead.
